Porsche has confirmed that its long-delayed electric 718 Cayman and Boxster are still in development, despite ongoing uncertainty about the future of the entry-level sports car lineup.

CEO Michael Leiters said the electric 718 remains the preferred direction because it is “the best solution economically” and described it as a “fantastic car.”

The 718 project has shifted multiple times, with Porsche previously considering EV-only, hybrid, and even petrol options. The company now appears to be focusing on a fully electric version as the most practical path forward.

This decision comes as Volkswagen continues efforts to cut costs and streamline future models, with earlier reports suggesting a planned gas-powered 718 replacement may be cancelled.

Porsche’s EV strategy still carries risk. In 2025, only 22.2% of global sales were fully electric, while 12.1% were plug-in hybrids, showing that EV adoption is still developing for the brand.

However, Europe remains stronger, with 57.9% of Porsche sales including electrification and about one-third fully electric, supported by models like the Taycan, Macan EV, and Cayenne EV.

The petrol-powered 718 Cayman and Boxster ended production in October 2025, with 18,612 units sold that year, down 21% from the previous year.

Porsche has not shared expected sales targets for the electric 718, but the model will likely depend on performance, handling, and brand appeal rather than volume.

Competition is expected to be limited, with rivals including the Alpine A110 EV and an Audi electric sports car based on the Concept C platform.

Technical details remain unknown, including battery size, range, power output, and final design, with only prototype sightings so far.

Porsche aims to preserve the 718’s lightweight, driver-focused character, making it a key test of whether an electric sports car can match the emotional appeal of its petrol predecessor.

If successful, the electric 718 could become one of the most important EV sports cars in the market when it launches.

Ford has officially named its upcoming affordable electric pickup the Fathom, with the new mid-size EV truck expected to arrive in 2027.

The automaker says the Fathom will start at $29,945, including the mandatory $1,595 destination fee, potentially making it one of the most affordable electric pickup trucks in the US.

The Fathom will be the first vehicle based on Ford’s new Universal EV platform, an architecture designed to support a wider family of lower-cost electric vehicles. The same platform is expected to eventually underpin SUVs, commercial vehicles and other pickups.

Ford reportedly considered bringing back a classic badge for the truck but ultimately decided to create a completely new name. The company selected Fathom as part of its effort to give the affordable EV lineup its own identity.

One of the biggest focuses of the new truck will be practicality. Ford says the Fathom will offer a roomy passenger cabin with more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, despite being positioned as a mid-size pickup.

The truck is also expected to feature several modern technologies, including Apple Maps integration, over-the-air software updates and Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system.

Production is planned for Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, with manufacturing expected to begin in 2027.

Ford is also introducing a simplified production method for the new EV platform. Instead of building the vehicle through a traditional assembly process, the front, center and rear sections will be produced separately before being joined together.

The company believes this approach will reduce manufacturing complexity and help keep the Fathom’s price relatively low.

Ford has invested roughly $5 billion in the affordable EV program, which is expected to play an important role in the company’s future electric vehicle strategy.

The automaker hopes the new platform will allow it to compete more effectively against lower-cost EV manufacturers, emerging startups and increasingly competitive electric vehicles from China.

However, several important details about the Fathom have not yet been announced. Ford has not revealed the truck’s final design, battery capacity, estimated driving range, charging performance or trim lineup.

Those details are expected to become clearer as the truck moves closer to its planned 2027 launch.

If Ford can deliver the Fathom near its promised starting price while offering competitive range and useful everyday capability, the truck could become an important new option for buyers looking for a more affordable entry into the electric pickup market.

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has rejected a petition seeking the recall of approximately 2.26 million Tesla vehicles. The agency said the available evidence did not show a widespread safety defect, removing the immediate possibility of a recall related to the complaint.

The petition, filed in March 2023, claimed that Tesla’s regenerative braking and one-pedal-driving systems could contribute to pedal misapplication and unintended acceleration. It sought a recall of vehicles built since 2013 and proposed changes requiring drivers to press the brake pedal before the vehicle could come to a complete stop in certain situations.

Tesla vehicles use regenerative braking to slow down when the accelerator is released while recovering energy for the battery. This one-pedal-driving feature is also used by many other electric vehicles because it improves efficiency and reduces reliance on conventional brakes.

During its review, NHTSA examined crash reports, complaints and vehicle data. It found only a small number of incidents that could be linked to the petition and said the vehicles responded correctly to driver inputs. The agency also found no evidence that the proposed system changes would have prevented those incidents.

Closing the petition does not mean no drivers reported unexpected movement. It means the regulator did not find enough evidence to prove that a common vehicle defect, rather than driver error or other factors, caused the incidents.

The decision avoids a major recall involving Tesla vehicles produced over more than a decade. Such a recall could have created significant repair costs, logistical difficulties and reputational damage for the company.

NHTSA said it will continue monitoring new complaints, crash reports and technical data. The case could be reopened if stronger evidence of a safety defect appears.

This decision is separate from the regulator’s ongoing investigation into Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. That investigation now covers approximately 3.2 million vehicles and focuses on the system’s performance in poor-visibility conditions.

The Full Self-Driving review began in October 2024 as a preliminary evaluation involving about 2.4 million vehicles. It has since moved to an engineering analysis, a more detailed stage that can take place before a recall is considered.

Despite its name, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system remains a driver-assistance feature that requires constant driver attention and supervision.

For Tesla, the petition’s closure removes one immediate concern involving unintended acceleration and pedal operation. However, the company continues to face regulatory scrutiny over its driver-assistance technology.

Tesla owners do not need to arrange repairs because no recall has been ordered for this issue. Drivers should still understand how regenerative braking works and remain ready to use the brake pedal when needed.

Overall, NHTSA concluded that the available evidence did not support a finding of a widespread defect. Even so, Tesla’s vehicle technology will continue to be closely monitored.
