Maruti Suzuki presently uses the 1.3-litre Fiat Multi jet turbocharged diesel mill to power the Swift, Dzire, Ritz and SX4 oil burners. They had signed a deal with the Italian automaker to receive a provide one-lakh mills beginning from 2012.

Since diesel engine vehicles make up a majority of MSIl’s current sales, it is likely that the company does not want to depend on an outside source in the long run for the engines. With Fiat implementing large scale growth plans for its Indian operations, the need for a company like MSIL to have its own engine supply has become all the more imperative. These new engines as well as Maruti’s future engine plant in Gujarat seems to be their step in extensive term sustainability.
