If you own any hi-fi cars like Audi or Benz then it is certainly important to know the hieroglyphics of what is marked on the sidewall of tyre. Many of them rely on trusted experts for dealing with the tyre concerns and updates, but still it is necessary to know at least the basic patterns of what connects the car with the road.

Do you know what 205/70R14 88 T mean?  Take time to analyse what those numbers and ratings mean. You can’t leave this as optional if you are preparing to hit the slopes in ski season. Know to decipher hieroglyphics and you can even become craze for tyres.

205 – The number which you find in the beginning part indicates the width of the tyre’s section and it is measured in millimeters.

70 – It is the aspect ratio, specifies the height of the tyre sidewall.

R14 – This indicates the rim diameter. ‘R’ means radial describing the model of construction and 14 represents the diameter in inches.

88 – It is the load index, specifying the maximum load capacity of the tyre.

– The last part indicates the speed index; the letter specifies the maximum speed the tyre can cope with.

For instance, if the speed symbol is mentioned as A5 then speed in km/h is 25 for A6 it is 30, A7 it is 35 and the list goes up to (Y) which is above 300. If you view the tyre of the Audi A1 you can see the markings 215/45R16 90V. Hope, you can now understand the terms of what each deals with.

When you look into tyre hieroglyphics the other major term which you will come across is “DOT” serial number. The DOT symbol is like a benchmark used to certify the tire manufacturer’s standard and the last four digits of the code gives the date of manufacture.
