The evidence is in the Car name: BRZ. The ‘B’ stands for boxer engine, the ‘R’ for rear-wheel drive, and the ‘Z’ for zenith. That preceding letter could be a tad presumptuous, but the assurance of B and R mean the BRZ force well deliver. The boxer engine is compacted; light, and most significantly the horizontally opposed cylinders promise a very low centre of gravity for the 2.0-litre engine. And the boxer engine is mounting in a compact (at a simple 1285mm tall it’s 19mm lesser than a Porsche Cayman) and illumination (1239kg) vehicle. And drive is sent to the back wheels, through six-speed manual gearbox (or a six-speed auto if you must) and a Torsen differential.

An adequate amount to get you thrilled. The 2.0-litre flat-four is logically aspirated for a crisper choke response, and it sit as low in the chassis as probable (with two people on board the centre of gravity is now 460mm high). The largest wheels and tires you can classify are 17in alloys wrapped in 215/45 R17 Michelin rubber. And if you’re actually keen, in 12 months’ time Subaru will advertise a de-contented version ready for tuning – it’ll do without air-con, a radio, the Torsen differential, each sort of automated or electric goody, and approach on 205/55 R16 tires.
